Screaming Into the Darkness: The Surprising Reach of Words

Hello Invisible Readers,

I often imagine myself screaming in the darkness, wondering if anyone or anything is listening.

That’s what posting online feels like. I pour my thoughts, ideas, and passions into carefully chosen words, hit “post,” and wait. I might get a few likes, maybe a comment or two, but it can feel like my words are vanishing into a dark void.

But, I am learning the metrics—likes, comments, and shares—don’t always tell the full story. There’s an invisible audience out there quietly reading, absorbing, and appreciating what I share.

Hello, silent people.

I’m always surprised when someone says, “I read everything you post,” or “I love your content.” It’s humbling and a little startling to realize people are paying attention, even when their attention isn’t visible.

My husband used to be on the radio. He understood that less than 10% of listeners would ever attempt to call the station. And of that group, he’d be lucky to talk to 5% of them. What’s the point? Don’t listen to the vocal at the harm of the broader group. There is a silent majority out there.

Social media prioritizes interaction over readers. Fewer likes doesn’t mean your content is not resonating. Some people don’t like or comment because they’re shy, busy, or just processing what you’ve shared. Others may never engage but are still out there, listening in the darkness.

Here’s what I’ve learned: keep posting.

Even when it feels like no one is listening, keep sharing your voice. Those moments of connection—when someone says, “Your post really spoke to me,” or “I’ve been following you for a while, and I love what you share”—make it all worth it.

Your words might be the encouragement someone needed but didn’t know how to thank you for. They might be the spark that inspires someone to take action or reflect on something important. Even if you don’t see the immediate results, your voice matters.

So, if you’ve ever felt like you’re screaming into the darkness, know this: the darkness listens. And sometimes, it answers in ways you don’t expect.
